Applications now being accepted for the 2018 Three Lakes Association Summer Intern Program!
Interested high school students from the Bellaire, Central Lake, Elk Rapids, Kalkaska, and Mancelona school districts may apply. Obtain hands-on experience in environmental science while giving back to the community. This coming summer, the Three Lakes Association plans to do a shoreline survey and will also continue work on ongoing projects and programs that preserve and protect Torch Lake, Lake Bellaire and Clam Lake.
Jump into projects that would include:
- large woody debris for habitat improvement,
- removal of sediment from the Grass River,
- study golden brown algae on lake floors,
- monitor for E. coli levels and macroinvertebrates,
- conduct fish assessments, and
- test lake water quality
Students will be expected to contribute at least 60 hours of volunteer time, to participate in various scientific activities, to prepare a report of their project, and to make a presentation of their work to the Three Lakes Association Board and to their school board. In addition to the fun students will be having, they will receive a ½ credit on their school transcript for environmental science and will also receive a stipend of $500 for their efforts. At the end of the program, TLA will issue individual letters acknowledging each student’s participation.
